We’re thrilled to announce that the Whereby Browser SDK v2 with React Hooks is now out of beta and available for everyone.

Whether you use our pre-built UI or want to create your own custom look-and-feel, the Browser SDK allows you to incorporate Whereby-powered video calls seamlessly into your application, while allowing you to make it look exactly as you want it.

Making Integration a Front-End Problem

Building a video call solution is no mean feat, we should know, we’ve been building ours for over 10 years! We know that many companies need to deliver reliable, user-friendly video calls to their customers, but don’t have the time, money and resources to build and maintain a video call solution themselves. And they shouldn’t have to.

That’s why we’ve created Whereby Embedded: it allows developers to focus on building their core experience, plugging our tried-and-tested video call technology easily into their product. Now, we’ve taken it to the next level with the Whereby Browser SDK v2; still the same powerful video call technology, but with full flexibility to customize the UI however you need.

Who is it for?

Our SDK is for developers looking to integrate video calls, but who want the freedom to customize the look, feel and features specifically to their use case and brand. This release enables them to build completely custom integrations using React Hooks.

We already have customers from many industries take advantage of fully integrated video calls, from Telehealth and Digital Mental Health, to eLearning and Recruitment. Our solution is even integrated into VR environments… the possibilities are endless!

What can I customize?

Everything!* With our React hooks, you now get programmatic access to the underlying data and functionality of a Whereby video call. From here, you are free to define exactly how the experience should look and feel, and not be constrained by the Whereby-provided pre-built user interface.

For instance, you can customize the video tile layout, their shape and size, the toolbar and call buttons, screen sharing and chat. Check out our developer docs to learn more.

*We haven’t made all video calling aspects available just yet. Functionality like breakout groups is yet to come, but the core video calling aspects should be there for you to build upon. We’ll be adding more features and functionality in the months to come. Make sure you’re signed up here to receive future announcements directly.

Sounds awesome! How do I get started?

To get started with Whereby React hooks, you just need to install the latest version of the @whereby.com/browser-sdk library from npm in your website or React project. You can also run this in your console to install it directly: npm i @whereby.com/browser-sdk

You’ll need a Whereby account and API key: sign up for free to try it out — you get 2000 Participant Minutes for free every month.
