But Twilio recommend we use Zoom…

As part of Twilio’s announcement, they have partnered with Zoom and are recommending customers switch to Zoom’s Video SDK. While we have great respect for Zoom, we believe that their developer solutions for real-time video are overly complex and cumbersome, and are likely not the most logical choice for many use cases. Here are just a few of the reasons why:

  • Zoom is not fully built on WebRTC APIs; it uses certain components of WebRTC, but it doesn’t utilize its full power: this results in extensive limitations for browser-based apps in terms of both performance and features.

  • Zoom is only offering Migration Engineering Resources to “select customers”.

  • Integrated video solutions are not Zoom’s core focus, making it challenging to build specialised and custom interfaces on top of the Zoom Web SDK. Furthermore, future development and improvements may not be prioritised as Zoom is mainly focused on its core meetings product.

  • Zoom’s Web SDK depends on the relatively new SharedArrayBuffer API to support many core features of a video call solution including gallery view, virtual backgrounds and 720p. SharedArrayBuffer requires developers to configure cumbersome “cross-origin isolation” headers, and iframes increase the complexity even further, as per Zoom’s own documentation.

  • There is limited browser support: Zoom’s background effects do not work in Firefox at the moment, and as SharedArrayBuffer is not supported in Android System WebView, none of the features depending on it will work either.
